What is Trauma?

Trauma is not your fault.

Trauma is when something deeply distressing happens to us that completely alters our world. This could be something that happens to us or something that we see happen to someone else. If you still find yourself thinking about what happened, it doesn't mean that there is something wrong with you. But there are ways that you can find peace.

How do I know if I have PTSD?

Not everyone who experiences a traumatic event gets Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, or PTSD. If you notice yourself still thinking about what happened, having nightmares, having trouble sleeping, or avoiding talking about it for several months after the event happened, you might have PTSD. The best way to know is to get evaluated by a licensed therapist.

It will get better.

If you are still struggling to make sense of what happened and notice that you are thinking about it a lot, talk therapy can help. We will move at a pace that works for you, and you won't be forced to talk about anything before you're ready. Processing what happened in a safe, nonjudgmental, therapeutic environment is one of the most effective ways to start to feel better.
